A rear-end collision at the height of rush hour on Interstate 90 in Bellevue last month sent three motorists to the hospital. According to a report in the Bellevue Patch, the Washington State Patrol said that the Mazda M2 was speeding down the interstate when the traffic ahead slowed. The driver was unable to stop and crashed into the rear of a Toyota Echo, pushing it into the HOV lane where it was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck. All three drivers were injured.
Washington State Rear-End Collisions
Rear-end collisions are the most common type of accident, according to the National Safety Council. Each year, motorists are involved in an average of 2.5 million rear-end collisions across the country. Rear-end collisions occur for a variety of reasons, including:
- Speeding/reckless driving — A motorist who is speeding or driving in a reckless manner may not have time to stop when necessary.
- Tailgating — Impatient or aggressive drivers may follow another vehicle too closely and not be able to stop if the other vehicle stops suddenly.
- Distracted driving — A driver who is paying attention to a passenger, talking or texting a cellphone, or being distracted by something else may not realize the need to stop until it is too late.
- Drowsy driving — A driver who has not had enough rest, or who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, can nod off at the wheel, causing a rear-end collision.
A rear-end collision stands a high chance of turning into a multi-vehicle crash, as in the collision on I-90. Under extreme conditions, a rear-end accident on an interstate can turn into a multi-car pile-up that causes serious injuries to numerous victims.
